Intestinal washing therapy is generally done by pouring water into the large intestine or colon. The doctor will insert a speculum shaped instrument through the rectum so that water can get to the colon. Later the water will clean the leftover food, products of digestion are still left in the intestines.
Researchers from Georgetown University to do an analysis of 20 studies on colon therapy wash, and found little evidence on the benefits of this therapy. In fact, some research indicates the possible side effects of these therapies such as abdominal cramps, flatulence, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance, and kidney failure.
"There are serious side effects that can occur in patients with intestinal washing therapy either do it at home or at the spa. In addition, the product of washing the intestine in the form of laxatives, drink tea, powder and capsules, the benefits are not found,"said Dr.Ranit Mishori, from Georgetown University School of Medicine.
